An anonymous poem Madeline L'Engle liked to quote - I had this up on my wall in my bedroom for a long, long time in high school (although I'm not sure I really "got it" at the time, based on the journals I kept). This is still what I aspire to:
The written word
Should be clean as bone,
Clear as light,
Firm as stone.
Two words are not
As good as one.
